Wildlife & Birdlife
Wildlife in Tuli moves according to the rhythms of the landscape itself.
Elephants follow ancient river routes. Hippos move along the channels below the lodge. Giraffe gather beneath isolated trees in the evening light. Vultures and eagles circle overhead during the heat of the day.
Some sightings remain unforgettable:
a relaxed leopard in a tree above its kill
rhino arriving at a waterhole during sundowners
wild dogs on the chase
breeding elephant herds playing in shallow water
lions calling somewhere beyond camp after dark
pel’s owl calling out into the night
clawless otter playing in the river once the sun has fallen over the horizon
Other moments are quieter:
leopard tortoises crossing the road
a chameleon walking along a sandy track
columns of ants moving steadily across the reserve
rock dassies sunbathing on warm stone
watching the lifecycle of mopane worms through the seasons
The birdlife around the lodge is constant.
Kingfishers, bee-eaters, egrets, hammerkop, geese and fish eagles move along the river throughout the day while frogs and crickets take over after dark.
We still haven’t seen aardvark or pangolin ourselves.
Others have.
