Small but mighty relatives

Did you know that the humble rock hyrax (or dassie) sunning itself on Limpopo-Lipadi’s rocky outcrops has a surprising family tree? These little, rabbit-sized mammals are the closest living relatives of elephants!

It may sound far-fetched, but science says it’s true: hyraxes and elephants share a common ancestor. Look closely and you’ll spot the clues: their tiny “tusks” (elongated incisors), the flat nails on their toes, and even the way they communicate with deep, rumbling calls.

So next time you see a dassie perched proudly on a rock, remember… you’re looking at a mini elephant in disguise!
